Roxie

In late January, we heard fr a volunteer at Animal Control about a senior dog (13 years old) named Roxie, a boxer/pit mix who was “owner surrendered”. She was very scared and confused.  We met Roxie the next day to see if we could take her into the Rescue. We fell in love with her at first sight.

There were a lot of things we needed to get into place…a foster and how were we going to get Roxie in the car (she was afraid to get in unless you were in the car first). We found a great foster and a rescue partner would ride in the back seat with Roxie on trips to the vet. Roxie’s foster worked with her on some of her fears…car rides became trips to Starbucks for pup cups, walks became adventures, and toys galore!

When Sheba came into the Rescue, with no other fosters available, Roxie’s foster fostered Sheba and Roxie came to the Rescue home. Right away, the founder of the Rescue fell in love with Roxie. She had a personality like no other…her facial expressions would brighten your day and you would have to smile!

When Roxie would receive inquires from potential adopters, they would state they were looking for a dog for protection. Roxie would alert you of danger by running the other direction 😊. She was the perfect companion. She could accompany you anywhere and she was the best behaved girl.

Months went by and no serious inquiries came in for Roxie. The founder had made up their minds if Roxie was not adopted by the last event of the year (Dec. 4), they would adopt her. She was already part of their family…they would make it official.

Then the dreaded news came on December 2nd. The persistent cough that now had drops of blood accompanying it was lung cancer.

Roxie was adopted that night by the founder and her husband. A bucket list was made…not the sort of bucket list of adventures…more like a list of food. Roxie loved to eat. Chicken, hamburger, pup cups, Twizzies, Nylabones that were edible (roast beef, bacon, etc).

On December 23rd, Roxie’s health started deteriorating. She had no interest in food and coughing was accompanied with blood. Roxie crossed the Rainbow bridge December 25, 2021. She became a Christmas Angel.

A friend told us “Don’t be sad that it’s over, smile that it happened.” The joy that Roxie brought into everyone’s lives will always be with us. She will be forever loved.
